How To Apply Mastic To Windows

1. I have recently treated/stained some wooden windows and prior to rubbing the windows down, removed the trowel mastic from effectually the edges of the window frames as a lot of information technology was coming abroad. I have now finished the work merely accept establish that re-applying the trowel mastic is no easy task. The window frames are stained wood butted up to smooth stone.

Is there a knack to applying trowel mastic (that I evidently haven't got) or could I use silicone instead ?

Thank yous for whatsoever helpful advice.

2. Bad idea to use silicone on windows, information technology's normally oil based mastic.

Endeavor using something similar this I used trowel mastic once, build upwardly in layers, I found the best manner to straighten the stuff was to rub in the mastic, with astern and forwards strokes ensuring as much every bit possible that the whole bract of the trowel is in contact with the mastic. You could also wet the trowel slightly , that may assist.

3. Cheers for the mail service Midnight Cowboy.

When building up in layers, do you let the first layer dry first ? I accept it that y'all hateful rubbing-in with the blade of the trowel backwards and frontwards to get it directly ?

It'due south my start time using trowel mastic and the end issue certainly wasn't pretty !

Thanks again.

4. "yous hateful rubbing-in with the bract of the trowel backwards and forwards to get it straight ?"

Yes, I establish that was the only way to go a decent margin, also keeping the heel of the trowel downwardly, without earthworks in [easier said than washed] and straight against the bending of the window and stonework worked.

The reason I mentioned layers was, I found when your working the mastic in, the trowel would pull/stretch the stuff, going back subsequently an hr or and so and adding to any low $.25 fabricated information technology more than manageable and a new layer could be polished in.

"It's my offset time using trowel mastic and the end result certainly wasn't pretty !"

Christ starting time time I used it, it looked like a ten yr onetime had done it,:D could be putty based? done properly though, looks proficient.

5. Good advice from Midnight, this stuff tin can be a correct sod to put in, in my view its merely a little better than using linseed oil putty!

As said, build information technology up and be patient, it will stay workable for quite a while.

It will help if it's warm, don't try and use it if you've left information technology out over dark in your van or shed.

As said be patient and start on window that are least visble. Good luck

6. Thank you both Midnight Cowboy and The Ex-Kitchen Fitter for your informative and helpful replies. Wish me luck !
7. Marky,

Let us know how you lot got on and laissez passer on any tips you constitute useful.

8. I would have thought a depression-modulus silicon would be more apt(if the gap is small plenty-8mm or less).

Mr. Handyandy - really
